Common Network Attacks

As mentioned earlier, network attacks can be categorized into two main types of attacks:

• Denial of Service (DOS)

• Network access attacks

In order to move into a discussion of how intrusion detection works to thwart some of these attacks, it is important to look at some common examples of such attacks. Understanding these attacks helps you understand the overall concept of IDS.

Denial of Service Attacks

This section looks at DoS attacks and discusses some pertinent examples. Generally speaking, in DoS attacks, an attacker disrupts services that a service provider offers its users.
