Chapter 11
Setting Up a Windows Server
IN THIS CHAPTER
Planning a Windows Server 2019 deployment
Installing Windows Server 2019
Configuring Active Directory and creating a new domain
This chapter presents the procedures that you need to follow to install Windows Server — specifically, Windows Server 2019. Note that although the specific details provided are for Windows Server 2019, installing a previous version is very similar. So you won’t have any trouble adapting these procedures if you’re installing an older version.
In this chapter, I make a couple of important assumptions from the start. First, I assume that you’re installing the server on a virtual machine. The procedures for installing a server directly onto physical hardware are similar, except that the installation media will be DVD disks instead of an ISO disk image.
Second, I assume that you’re installing Windows Server 2019 into a brand new VM rather than trying to upgrade an existing virtual machine that already has a previous version of Windows Server 2019. Although it is possible to upgrade a previous Windows Server version to 2019, I don’t generally recommend it because more than a few things can go wrong.
