In this chapter, we look at vehicular communication technologies—with 3GPP LTE C-V2X and IEEE 802.11p-based DSRC (U.S.) and ITS-G5 (Europe) being the main candidates—their respective feature sets, required modifications to existing modem technologies, and specific deployment challenges, such as high-speed operation and high node density, and so on. We further discuss issues of existing V2X protocols for networking vehicles, which are for IEEE 802.11p the poor scalability, lack of QoS guarantee, intermittent V2I connectivity, and high cost for coverage.
