）が登場する前は、名前ベースバーチャルホストを
HTTPS
に対
応させようとすると、運用管理が非常に煩雑でした。
SSL
接続は、ドメイン名があらかじめ指定された証明書を用いて、サーバが
HTTP
ヘッダを受
け取る前に確立されます。この手順では、サーバは
SSL
接続の確立前にアクセス先のドメイン名
を知りえません。そのためサーバは、アクセス先のドメイン名が指定されている証明書を選ぶこと
ができません。
もし証明書のドメイン名と異なるホストにアクセスを試みると、ブラウザはそのホストを安全
なホストではないと判断し、ユーザに対して派手な警告を表示します。
