Preface
The software delivery space is changing rapidly. The goal remains the same—to produce quality software that helps customers and businesses—but the way to achieve that goal continues to evolve.
This book’s predecessor, Effective Feature Management (O’Reilly), was released in February 2019. Since then, many of the technologies involved in delivery have evolved. Maturation in tooling has led to a complete shift in how teams engage and operate in this space. This shift and other global developments, such as the shift to remote work and the increase of cloud adoption, have changed the way software teams work in 2023.
The traditional divisions and handoffs in software delivery among product management, design, development, operations, and analysis have become democratized and more collaborative. Historically, these teams have operated in siloed verticals, focusing on tasks impacting their specific workstreams in a step-by-step, waterfall fashion. The rise of Agile, DevOps, and continuous delivery broke down barriers, and now there’s a next wave of operating continuously in which leading organizations are forming integrated teams for even closer collaboration to produce high-quality, less risky software. Software development is truly a team effort. This book will explore this concept and give you a closer view into how organizations are adopting an operating continuously mindset and the pitfalls they may encounter along the way.
