9.1 Introduction
Recent single-core transmission systems have achieved capacities up to about 100 Tb/s per fiber by employing time-, wavelength-, polarization-division multiplexing, and multilevel modulations [1–3]. However, the transmission capacity of the single-core fiber is rapidly approaching its fundamental limit, and the current trends of traffic growth—increasing by a factor of 10 in 5 years—and system capacity growth will result in capacity crunch in the near future [4,5].
