Landscape images can come in many forms and guises, from close up detailed shots of stones on a beach to wide open mountain vistas, and of course, everything in between. Images can be taken spontaneously to good effect, but a successful and pleasing landscape image has usually involved a lot of thought and consideration.

A good landscape image can often be partially created well before you have unpacked your camera and pressed the shutter. It is in the visionary phase where you can create your perfect image in your mind’s eye and imagine every aspect and detail that you would like to capture; you can arrange objects for optimum balance, imagine the type of light you would like to compliment the scene, and even dream of the type of weather.

The natural progression from the imaginary phase is the planning phase. Once you have your image firmly lodged in your mind, then it’s time to work out when, where, and how to achieve it. You might have a favorite beach or forest where you can start to plan the image capture; you might want to make some scouting walks to determine where and when the best chances of enhancing light will come from, or look for that composition that will satisfy your preconceived image.
