The Wawona Hotel is a National Historic Landmark and is one of the oldest mountain resorts in California dating back to the late 1800s. The area was originally developed by Galen Clark in 1856 and served as a way station for travelers to Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of the Giant Sequoias. The current building was opened as the Big Tree Station in 1879. The hotel is surrounded by large meadows and rushing streams and is maintained in its original period style, which is very picturesque. The exterior and interior offer many photographic opportunities.
