Chapter 2 provided the foundational elements of successful enterprise organizations. In this chapter, we will explore how governance and sociotechnical elements serve as a practical mechanism for enforcing high-level principles into consistent and scalable practices. At the enterprise level, governance is foundational to effective strategy at scale because it’s unreasonable for centralized strategy leaders to drive their strategy across every context in their organizations.
As we just reviewed, organizational principles should be a prioritized set of values that reflects high-level strategy foundations; with this, distributed pockets of leadership can then apply these principles to their specific context. We’ll discuss in this chapter how centralized and distributed forms of governance serve a similar purpose.
