The abortion wars have eroded more than America’s political climate. The conflict has had a direct impact on women who have abortions; on their families, friends, and communities; and on public perceptions about the decisions and behavior that surround an abortion.
The pro-life messages about women who have abortions have been mixed. According to Joffe in Dispatches from the Abortion Wars, “Women getting abortions were a prime focus of the movement’s wrath, demonized as ‘murderers,’ ‘sluts,’ and interestingly, ‘lesbians.’”1 When it comes to the fanatics, she’s right.
