After reading this chapter, you'll understand why SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) is one of the simplest tools in the Microsoft stack to configure. This is because of the easy-to-use SQL Server Configuration Manager and the complete (yet understandable) properties of an SSRS server, accessed through SQL Server Management Studio.

To understand how SSRS works, you must understand how a report is built and executed. Thus, a brief overview of Report Builder (which is a useful way for DBAs to create reports) is in order. Then the real fun begins as you see SSRS in action through the use of Report Manager. Report Manager is a suite of web pages that ships with SSRS. These pages enable users to easily execute their reports and give administrators methods to manage, schedule, and maximize server resources.
