It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Introduction
SQL Server 2014 represents the largest jump forward in scalability, performance, and usability for the database administrator (DBA), developer, and business intelligence (BI) developer of any SQL Server release. SQL Server 2014 has already broken two world records in the TCP-H benchmark in the 3TB and 10TB configurations, breaking records previously held by Oracle/SPARC, as well as outperforming Oracle in both categories. The power and performance of SQL Server 2014 bring capabilities previously only available in the Parallel Data Warehouse (PDW) and Analytic Platform System (APS) appliances, and deliver them to regular SQL Server users and businesses large and small. Understanding the features and when to apply them is one small part of your job. Once a system is built, it must still be maintained.
It is no longer unheard of to have 40TB databases running on a SQL Server. SQL Server administration used to be just the job of a DBA. But as SQL Server proliferates throughout smaller companies, many developers have begun to act as administrators and BI developers as well. Poor configuration of features can result in poor performance.
