Java a proposé des fonctions d’entrées/sorties (input/output, I/O) depuis sa première version, mais pour que le langage soit indépendant de la plate-forme (un des slogans de Java), les premières versions de ce sous-système ont privilégié la portabilité au détriment de la richesse fonctionnelle et de la simplicité d’utilisation.
