It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

string sha1_file(stringpath[, boolbinary])
Calculates and returns the sha1 encryption hash for the file at
path. A sha1 hash is a 40-character hexadecimal
value that can be used to checksum a file’s data. If
binary is supplied and is true, the result is sent as a 20-bit binary
value instead.
