In sharp contrast to Windows and macOS, Linux, BSD, and other X11 systems have no blessed default desktop environments or controlling entities to dictate UI standards. There are well over a dozen full desktop environments available for these platforms, each with its own goals and ideals about user interaction.
While there are multiple projects working to create human interface guidelines (HIG), we'll be following the Gnome HIG, used by the Gnome, MATE, and XFCE desktops, available at https://developer.gnome.org/hig/stable/. The Gnome desktop is the default desktop environment on many Linux distributions, including Red Hat, newer versions of Ubuntu, and Debian, which is our target environment.
