10.1 Inkjet Printing Technology for QD Patterning in Full-color Displays

Inkjet printing (IJP) is a widely used technology for producing high-quality prints in various applications, including document printing, photography, and manufacturing processes such as the production of electronic circuits or display panels, including quantum dot (QD) light-emitting diode (QD-LED) displays. Unlike traditional printing methods, the IJP operates without physical contact, mitigating risks of substrate damage or surface contamination, which is particularly advantageous for delicate materials. The capability to accurately place small ink droplets facilitates the creation of dense pixel patterns, pivotal for achieving high-resolution QD-LED displays [13].

The basic principles of IJP involve the precise deposition of liquid ink droplets onto a substrate to create a desired image or pattern. There are two main types of IJP technologies, drop-on-demand (DOD) and continuous inkjet (CIJ), each distinguished by its approach to generating ink droplets as shown in Table 10.1. In DOD printing, ink droplets are precisely deposited onto substrates, facilitating high-resolution prints and intricate imagery, where each droplet is individually managed, ensuring precision and sharpness in the final output. Moreover, DOD printers exhibit reduced ...
