13.1 Introduction to Sensing with Quantum Dots

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have already become commercially important in light emission applications and now are showing an impact on the domain of light sensing. Photon detection technologies play an important role in communications, photography, personal electronics, machine vision, security, medicine, and other areas, using many parts of the electromagnetic spectrum from the infrared to X-rays [13].

The versatility of QDs as a material family has allowed commercial light sensing products to be developed at lower cost than existing image sensor technologies, especially in the SWIR range, beyond the absorption spectrum of silicon. This allows them to function as a building block for compelling new applications. Current developments are mostly focused on QD-based sensors using the (wafer-based) CMOS platform for the readout electronics. At the same time, the feature of solution processability makes it possible to scale this technology to large-area substrates in the flat panel display (FPD) platform for true disruption in accessibility and affordability of new types of sensors.
