11.1 Introduction

Displays play a vital role in the modern information age, as they are the central window through which people can obtain interactive information. As the information age has developed from the computer and local area network era to the internet, smartphone, and Internet of Things era, the quantity and quality of information have increased exponentially with endless requirements for displays.

Since the advent of the cathode-ray tube (CRT) display technology, display technologies have undergone two disruptive innovations: (1) Innovation from CRT to semiconductor displays represented by liquid crystal displays (LCDs), wherein the display turned from bulky to thin; and (2) evolution from transmissive LCD to self-emissive displays, including organic light-emitting diode (OLED), quantum dot light-emitting diode (QD-LED), and micro-LED, which further reduce the thickness of the display and enable flexible form factors. Among various display techniques, OLED has already become a mature technology and is widely used in the mobile display market, reaching sales of 0.77 billion active-matrix OLED (AM OLED) panels in 2023 [1]. Key players in the display industry, such as Samsung Display, LG Display, and BOE, have announced their investment plans ...
