The International Energy Agency (IEA) was established in 1974 in the wake of the first major oil crisis. The initial focus was on oil supply, but it has since broadened to include renewable energy, among other issues, with an emphasis on gathering of statistics, analysis of policies and markets, and addressing issues related to systems integration. The IEA acts as policy advisor to its member states (OECD countries), but has also worked with non-member countries (particularly China, India, and Russia) through implementing agreements.
