6.1. Overview—Policies for Renewable Transportation
Three routes exist for increasing the deployment of renewable energy technologies in the transportation sector. Currently, the most important route is the replacement of fossil fuels by renewable transport fuels (liquid and gaseous) produced from biomass. The other two routes involve the use of renewable electricity to charge batteries for electric vehicles, and conversion of renewable energy to hydrogen for use in fuel cell vehicles.
