This book is one of many research products that grew out of a shared vision by Sloan Foundation President Ralph Gomory and our MIT colleagues, Thomas Allen and Charles Cooney, which led to the formation of the MIT Program on the Pharmaceutical Industry in 1991. Anthony Sinskey and Robert Rubin became prominent members of the team. Rubin, in particular, was the source of numerous insights and anecdotes about the field of medicine, some of which are reflected in this manuscript.
