Louis: Well Doug, despite an almost universal lack of support from governments and other organizations around the world—not to mention a Russian fleet moving to position itself right in the way—Mr. Obama seems intent upon committing an act of war against the government of Syria. It’s becoming harder and harder to tell the difference between Republicans and Democrats. What do you make of this?
Doug: It’s completely insane. It’s further proof that the U.S. government is completely out of control at this point. It’s been captured by sociopaths, and the chances of a gentle reform are about as good as they were in the USSR in the 1920s, Germany in the 1930s or China in the 1950s—to use some examples of equal importance. But that’s looking at the big picture. From a strictly tactical point of view, it makes no sense at all to get involved militarily in yet another Middle Eastern country.
L: We should note that, unlike many pundits, you’ve actually been to Syria.
D: Yes. A couple of times, actually, including renting a car and driving all around the country a few years back. That hardly makes me an expert, but being on the ground doesn’t hurt. We should also point out that, like most of the countries in the region, Syria isn’t really a nation, in the sense of being one people living in a particular geographic area.
