8A Short Guide to Designing Rituals

After reading about other rituals, perhaps you are interested in creating one that would fit your context and goals. We encourage you to experiment with ritual design, to imagine how your work life and relationships could be better.

We have designed rituals over the past four years in our workshops and classes. The basic process of creating a new ritual has three big phases: Discovery, Design, and Deployment.

In the Discovery phase, you explore potential moments, inspirations, and intentions that could be at the heart of your ritual. Then in the Design phase you switch to experimenting with various elements to create the right experience. In the Deployment phase, you think more strategically, about how to roll out your ritual so that it is nimble, low-barrier, and likely to be adopted and adapted by your community.

To the right are the words "aspirations/myths," written above an image of two tall mountains with a flag planted on one of the peaks. Further to the right are the words "values/beliefs," written above an image of the heart sign. A man and a woman are standing below these, facing them. The man is pointing upward. A trail of dots leads from the head of the man to the image of the dart board, and another trail of dots leads from his head to the image of the mountains. Similarly, two trails of dots lead from the woman's head to the image of the mountains and the image of the heart sign.

For example it could be about being a better colleague, inspiring more creativity on your team, or creating a sense of welcome to new employees.
