The Essential Programs and Files of MySQL

From the installation process in Day 2, “Installing MySQL,” you will have noticed that the MySQL package is made up of many programs, files, and subdirectories. There's no need to get confused by these; for most purposes you can get by using only a few of them.

If you installed MySQL from source in Day 2, you will have two directories: a source directory (called mysql-VERSION) and an installation directory (mysql).

If you installed from the binary package on either Linux or Windows, or you installed the RPM, you will just have an installation directory, mysql.

Let's have a look at what's in the installation directory. Here's a sample listing of what you'll see if you install MySQL from source:

# ls -l ...
