I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Signature-Based IPS/IDS
A signature is just a set of rules looking for some specific pattern or characteristic in either a single packet or a stream of packets. A new sensor may have thousands of default signatures provided by Cisco. Not all the signatures are enabled, but the administrator can enable, disable, customize, and create new signatures to meet the needs of the current network where the sensor is operating. An example is a known attack, such as a cross-site scripting attack, where an HTTP variable contains a quote or bracket character to terminate some HTML syntax, followed by a <SCRIPT> tag.
