Operating characteristic (OC) curves for an R chart (based on upper action line only). Figure H.1 shows, for several different sample sizes, a plot of the probability or chance that the first sample point will fall below the upper action line, following a given increase in process standard deviation. The x axis is the ratio of the new standard deviation (after the change) to the old; the ordinate axis is the probability that this shift will not be detected by the first sample.
