SNOBOL is a text pattern matching language developed in the 1960s. Modern programmers might find its syntax quaint, and maybe even a tad frustrating, but I suspect the power of the language will shine through in the end as we explore its features, some of which are still with us in modern languages like Python.

SNOBOL, like Forth, is a denizen of the later Paleozoic. SNOBOL and Forth are of similar vintage, but they are extremely different. Forth is minimal and low level. SNOBOL is abstract and surprisingly powerful, though quirky.
