SVG文書をレンダリングするシステムに組み込まれているフォントは、作成者のほとんどのニーズを満たしてくれます。とはいえ、カスタムフォントを使いたい場合もあるでしょう。SVGで使用するためのフォントをゼロから作成することは可能です。簡単に言うと、<font>要素を使って、フォントのグリフの原点とデフォルトの幅を指定します。<font>の中には<font-face>要素を含めます。この要素には、フォントの寸法をきわめて詳細に指定するための数多くの属性があります。表E-1は、特に役立つ属性をいくつかまとめたものです。すべての属性については、SVGの仕様（http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG/fonts.html）で詳しく見ることができます。
SVGフォントの仕様は、デザイナーが、利用しやすいロゴやグラフィックスを作成できることを目的としています。検索エンジンやスクリーンリーダー（画面読み上げプログラム）はそれらのテキストを一連の文字として理解しますが、それらのデザインは全面的にカスタマイズが可能で、しかもどのシステムでも同じように表示されます。これを書いている時点では、このような理想はまだ実現されていません。いくつかの主要なブラウザーでSVGフォントが実装されていないからです。カスタムSVGフォントを作成する場合、それらのブラウザーでも使えるように、他のフォントフォーマットに変換するWebサービスもあります。
