This first chapter presents the big picture of system programming and basic background information on Unix. We begin with an exploration of what system programs are and how they are different from other kinds of programs. Next, I’ll introduce many of the fundamental concepts that underlie the Unix family of operating systems, and we’ll conclude with a brief discussion of the history and standardization of Unix and the C programming language.
