The first chapter of the book introduced the concept of threads and multithreaded programs without much detail. In subsequent chapters, we touched on threads, usually because they were mentioned in the documentation about something else we were studying, such as how a process could be notified of a timer expiration. At those points in the book, we ignored thread-related topics. In this chapter, we’ll examine threads, and in particular, POSIX threads, in greater detail.
