Everyone loves to talk about the hot-button issues, which in the United States at the moment include immigration, wealth inequality, gun rights, police brutality, terrorism, and healthcare reform. Sounding off on these questions may seem like fun at first, but in the end it is frustrating and demoralizing, because we just talk past each other and resolve nothing. It is much more useful to start with everyday dilemmas and build our ethical reasoning skills gradually. Going straight to the big issues is like going straight from 2 + 2 = 4 to integral calculus.
