CHAPTER 2

Customizing Windows

Windows comes with a number of features that enable you to personalize your computer. Not only can you change the appearance of Windows to suit your taste, but you can also change the way Windows works to make it easier to use and more efficient.

“Windows 11 Settings app displaying the Personalization settings for the Lock screen. The current lock screen image is visible at the top, showing the date and time. Below, options to personalize the lock screen with a picture, recent images, and a button for browsing photos. Additional settings include toggles for displaying fun facts, tips, and tricks, and the choice to show detailed status from an app, with 'Weather and more' selected. The user, identified as Paul M with an email address, is making adjustments to these settings.”

Pin an App to the Start Menu

You can customize the Start menu for quick access to the apps you use most often. If you have an app that does not appear as a tile on the Start menu, you usually open the app by first navigating the Start menu’s apps list to locate the app, possibly negotiating one or more submenus along the way. For apps you use often, you can avoid this extra work by pinning their icons permanently to the main Start menu. After you have pinned an app, you launch it by displaying the Start menu and clicking the app.

Pin an App to the Start Menu

“The image shows the Windows 11 Start Menu interface. The Start Menu is open, displaying pinned applications such as Edge, Microsoft 365 (Office), Outlook (new), Microsoft Store, Photos, Settings, Xbox, Solitaire & Casual Games, Spotify, Paint, Microsoft Clipchamp, LinkedIn, Calculator, Clock, Notepad, Snipping Tool, and File Explorer. Below the pinned apps, there is a 'Recommended' section showing recently added or accessed items like OneNote, a screenshot, Publisher, and an Autumn Furniture Sale document. The taskbar at the bottom includes icons for the Start Menu, Search, Task View, Widgets, File Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Store, and other applications. The system tray on the right shows the date and time, network status, volume control, and other system icons. The image highlights the 'All apps' button in the Start Menu and the Start Menu icon on the taskbar.”
