CHAPTER 14

Making Windows More Accessible

If you have visual, hearing, or mobility challenges, you might find the default Windows setup to be frustrating, inefficient, or close to unusable. Fortunately, Windows offers a variety of tools, features, and settings that are designed to make your computer more accessible. As you learn in this chapter, you can increase the text size, use text-to-speech, use voice commands, and more.

“The image shows the 'Accessibility > Contrast themes' settings page in a Windows operating system. The page allows users to select and apply different high-contrast themes to make text and apps easier to see. There are four theme previews: Aquatic, Desert, Dusk, and Night sky. The 'Contrast themes' toggle is turned on, and the Aquatic theme is selected in the dropdown menu. There are options to Apply, Edit, or Delete the selected theme. The left sidebar shows various settings categories, including Home, System, Bluetooth & devices, Network & internet, Personalization, Apps, Accounts, Time & language, Gaming, Accessibility, Privacy & security, and Windows Update. The user's profile is displayed at the top left with the name 'Paul M' and the email 'logophilia@outlook.com.'”

Increase the Text Size

You can make most text on your computer screen bigger by adjusting the text size to a larger value. If you have a visual impairment — or if your eyesight is not what it used to be — the relatively small size of most of the text displayed by the Windows interface and by your apps can make it difficult to use your computer. To remedy this problem, Windows offers a setting that enables you to increase the size of most text that appears on the screen, including the text in menus, title bars, and icons.

“The image displays the Windows 11 Start menu with the Settings app highlighted. The Start menu showcases pinned apps like Edge, Microsoft 365 (Office), Outlook, Microsoft Store, Photos, and more. The taskbar at the bottom features icons for various applications, and the user's profile picture appears at the bottom left. Numbered labels indicate steps: click the Start button (1) and then the Settings app (2). This image guides users on accessing the Settings app in Windows 11.”
