CHAPTER 6AI-Builder PM: Architecting the Foundation of Intelligent Systems
The AI-Builder PM is the strategic and technical leader responsible for the foundational AI capabilities within an organization. They usually don't focus on individual user-facing features (that's the AI-Experiences PM's domain). Instead, they build and manage the platforms, models, and frameworks that empower other teams to create AI-powered products. Think of them as the architects and builders of the AI infrastructure—the people who lay the groundwork for AI innovation.
This role is critical because a robust and scalable AI foundation is essential for long-term success with AI. The AI-Builder PM ensures that the organization has the tools and resources it needs to develop and deploy AI solutions efficiently and effectively. They are the enablers, making it possible for others to build AI-powered experiences.
The AI-Builder PM works closely with data scientists and Machine Learning Engineers (who build and train the specific models), with Software Engineers (who integrate the models and platforms into products), and with AI-Experiences PMs (who define the user-facing features). They translate high-level business needs and product strategies into a technical roadmap for AI infrastructure.
