Intellectual Property Rights Protection
IPR infringement is a big issue—and a huge industry—with a long history in China. While the country has been trying to improve its IPR protection laws, especially after joining the WTO in 2001, enforcement remains weak. Nearly all large multinational companies have experienced piracy of their products. Of particular concern is piracy of such products as chemicals and pharmaceuticals which puts public safety at risk. The reason enforcement still remains weak is that the rule of law is shallowly rooted in China. Another important reason is that piracy of big brands is a key source of income in many parts of the country.
