Abstract
This chapter examines the central role of communication in human–robot interaction (HRI) research with a focus on social robotics. The concept of communication has been important for theorizing interactions between people and technology since the advent of computers, and the ability to exchange messages in a life-like manner is a defining aspect of social robotics.
