I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
The purpose of this chapter is to establish (or act as a reminder of) the foundations of our knowledge of technical lighting and how these concepts narrate how we think about light. The placement of light, shaping of light, ratios, and all these other terms will become our language as we communicate through dramatic portraiture. Lighting is an integral part of the end goal and an essential tool to convey mood and to help direct the eye where to look.
Think about what the concept of drama means to you. Is it darkness and shadow? Contrast? Expression? Mood? Kevin Dillon? A combination of all these things except Kevin Dillon?
