CHAPTER 2The Empathy Process: a step-by-step guide
The Empathy Process is straightforward, involving four major steps:
- Being consciously curious
- Openly exploring
- Challenging your mental model
- Leading with empathy.
Each step, as illustrated in figure 2.1 (overleaf), is crucial, and I will explore them in detail in this book.
Of all the steps, though, I believe the first one is possibly the most difficult and the final one the most important for modern leaders. In the pages of this book, we will journey through each step and explore the challenges we must overcome to build empathy. While the process is simple to look at, it can be complicated and exhausting to implement consistently due to the fast pace and diversity of modern workplaces. While it does take work, the benefits can be exceptional. Being able to understand what drives people, what they care about and the essence of their soul provides a foundation for incredible influence and change. Let's get cracking!
