CHAPTER 4Challenging the way you see the world
Through spending time to openly explore with conscious curiosity, our objective is to collect information that we may not have had before. Sometimes this information will be structured, unambiguous and quantifiable. Other times this information will be messy, confusing and unverifiable. But it is information nonetheless.
One thing you may not yet know about me is that I love cycling. I love the feeling of freedom and exhilaration of leaning deep into corners, descending long hills and, maybe most of all, climbing steep mountains on a road bike. I'm obsessed with watching the Tour de France and will stay up all night during the race, in particular to watch the best cyclists in the world battle it out on the famous climbs. Any ascent of Alp d'Huez, Col du Glandon and Col d'Izoard are all among my favourite stages to watch. For years I had sat on my couch in the wee hours of the morning, watching the battle of the best and secretly dreaming of tackling them myself.
In 2016, my wife and I were in France as part of our long journey to become pregnant. We were travelling around staying in beautiful towns through the Alps and each time we reached a new town, I would hire a bike and find the best climbs nearby to test myself on. I had managed to tick off the three mentioned above. When we started our journey across the southern half of France towards Avignon I decided we needed to make a stop at a small town called Malaucène.
