May and Sam stood next to each other in silence on the Promenade at Brooklyn Heights. Across the water, the tip of Manhattan protruded, laden with its tight-packed zigzag of massively tall buildings. The early evening air was tinged violet, and the vast mosaic of lights from the lower Manhattan buildings was beginning to glow yellow and white. May was looking intently beyond the gothic arches of the Brooklyn Bridge.
“That’s where the towers used to be. I think you never get over the shock of it,” she said, “of how, suddenly, something so enormous, so iconic, and all those thousands of lives, can just suddenly disappear.”
