We have been talking about “the future of work” for years, and then the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated remote work overnight. We went from commuting daily to working from home five days a week. The multi-year debate we have been having around return-to-office (RTO) made me wonder if we have truly made progress. Then I remembered: People don’t like change or change that is done to them.
Leaders did not like how COVID-19 shut down the world and forced everyone to work from home. There was a sense of “return-to-normal” many likely desired. Employees have been vocal about needing flexibility in the post-pandemic world and made headlines when they said no to promotions in exchange for working from home, for instance.
At the core of these debates isn’t “flexibility,” but rather “autonomy” and “trust.” We don’t want flexibility—what we want is that our employer trusts us and shows us that they trust us by giving us autonomy to work in a flexible way.
A 2023 Harvard Business Review article highlights the connection between employee well-being and having a sense of autonomy: “Ditching the commute allowed people to lighten their financial load, gain back time in their day, and better control their mental and physical health.
