Bill Hill told us how he escaped poverty. He grew up in Scotland in dire circumstances and later went on to invent, at Microsoft, the font-smoothing technique that is used on all computers and phones today to make text easier to read. Back when he grew up, instead of playing on the streets like other kids, he went to the library.
