It was late December 2015 in New York City. Everywhere you looked, sparkling white lights glinted across tree branches, and elaborate Christmas displays filled the storefront windows of Fifth Avenue. But I was huddled in bed with a cough and a fever, wondering what I was doing.
That year, I’d given seventy-four talks to promote my book Stand Out, most of them in other cities. Once or even twice a week, I’d clamber into a taxi and head to the airport, eat questionable late-night meals from whatever restaurant was still open, and then do it all over again. As I tossed and turned in my febrile state, I wondered: Why did I bother to live in New York, one of the most expensive cities in the world, if I was hardly ever home?
