The long and short of it is that metrics become a problem when they’re the biggest factor in reward and recognition. Things fall apart when standardized metrics become the primary way of tracking individual contributions to the business and determining how employees are treated and retained. People do want to be recognized for their contributions, but companies and managers need to recognize that a person’s contributions may come outside of the standardized metrics.
