13Measure with the Right Stick

As the old marketing adage goes: if it ain't measured, it doesn't matter. This is true for classic search, and it is absolutely true for AI search.

To make a long story short, we're going to need some better metrics. As marketers, we need to report to stakeholders, pitch for resources, and demonstrate results. This is impossible without KPIs. But this sudden shift in our digital world has dragged KPIs with it, meaning a new set of measurables is required.

For businesses, the essentials stay the same—revenue, sales, and the bottom line are still the core metrics anchoring everything else. But AI assistants have a unique user experience, meaning the path to those conversions looks completely different. Generative search visibility isn't just an SEO play; it's a confluence of PR, social media, technical web strategy, and UGC.

Translating the Metrics: Legacy SEO Versus AI Search

If you are presenting to a board that is used to traditional SEO reports, you need to translate your new AI metrics into a language they already understand. The table below acts as your cheat sheet. While these metrics might look like distant cousins at first glance, the mechanics of how you actually track and report on them are fundamentally different.
