3Encouraging Others
The Three Levels of Encouragement
People with the courage to overcome their difficulties don't do things that would discourage others and are able to encourage others smoothly. Keep the following three levels in mind:
- Encourage others within the bounds of mutual respect and trust.
- Encourage others in a way that they can encourage themselves.
- Encourage others in a way that is useful to the community.
Starting with a relationship built on mutual respect and trust, your partner should not just be waiting for your encouragement while acting, but rather should be able to spontaneously encourage themselves. Ideally, this will result in them not thinking “I only need to take care of myself,” but instead encouraging those around them as well.
Using the manga as an example, Yukari saw Rui Nomura as a rival, but he always acted with mutual respect and trust, and so he saved her when her mistake caused a dilemma.
Seeing Nomura's consistent demeanor not only changed the way she saw him but also changed the combative relationship she had with men in general. This changed the way she acted to her subordinates and expanded her viewpoint away from tending to think about herself first to considering what was best for the office or the company as a whole. This is precisely the outcome of encouragement.
