It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

It is not how you play the game that is important; it is whether you win or lose—at least when it comes to retirement investing. So, where will you score better: in a variable annuity or by owning mutual funds outside of an annuity?
Figures lie and liars figure. You will find plenty of people with complicated sets of figures to support their proposition that variable annuities are a better investment than owning mutual funds. These people generally are looking to sell you a variable annuity.
