Remember strobing? It is basically an artifact caused by the two-bladed shutters of those greasy old film projectors. When you see a movie released on film, you are only seeing something half the time (the shutter is closed the other half). Each frame is flashed twice to achieve the critical flicker rate of 48 per second. At any rate less than that, the picture will flicker. Please bear with me on this: as the projector movement pulls down the next frame, the shutter must blank out the light (or closes); then it opens and closes and opens again on the same frame, then closes again while the next frame is pulled down.
