Thermodynamic Properties of Electrolytes and of EMF Cells

4.0 Introductory Comments

In this chapter, we study the thermodynamic properties of ionic solutions, where the interaction forces between charged species are both strong and of long range. At the outset we need to take account of deviations from ideality, using the machinery set up in the first half of Chapter 3, in which the concept of activity and activity coefficients plays an important part. Heavy reliance is therefore placed on the Debye–Hückel theory, which is used below without justification.
