Millions of children grow up hearing and speaking more than one language. Mastery of two languages is called bilingualism. An important aspect of bilingualism is that someone who is bilingual not only understands a second language, but can speak and read it as well. There are other people who have mastered more than two languages; this is called multilingualism. And, of course, there are many of us who can communicate in only one language, which is called monolingualism.
